Apertus was trained using a staggering 15 trillion tokens across over 1,000 languages, with nearly 40% of the data sourced from non-English languages. Imanol Schlag, the technical lead of the project, stated that “Apertus is built for the public good”, setting a high standard for multilingualism and transparency.

Swisscom has already begun deploying Apertus on its proprietary AI platform, a move that highlights its commitment to fostering not just technological advancements but a secure and responsible AI environment that prioritizes public interest.

Trying Apertus: Access and Use

Accessing Apertus is a breeze for those familiar with tech, but effective utilization might require robust servers or cloud resources. Developers can test their mettle using Apertus during the ongoing Swiss AI Weeks, which run until October 5, 2025. Participants in hackathons will enjoy special access through a Swisscom-hosted interface, while Swisscom's business clientele can start leveraging the model right away. For those beyond Swiss borders, Apertus will also be accessible through the Public AI Inference Utility.

Joshua Tan, the Lead Maintainer of the Public AI Inference Utility, captures the ethos behind Apertus succinctly: “This model serves the public interest, as does infrastructure like highways or electricity.”

Compliance and Ethical Integrity

Apertus adheres to open-source licensing that ensures access to training data, model weights, and intermediate checkpoints. Its training process was strictly in line with Swiss data protection laws and EU AI Act transparency requirements, demonstrating a rigorous commitment to ethical standards. The training data was carefully curated to exclude personal information, ensuring privacy and ethical compliance.
