The cinematic landscape has been increasingly enriched by technological advancements, especially through the integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in film production. A notable example of this is the recent film "The Brutalist," directed by Brady Corbet, which employs AI to refine character accents, particularly Hungarian dialogues.

A New Approach to Filmmaking

Set in the aftermath of World War II, "The Brutalist" tells the story of László Tóth, a fictional Hungarian-Jewish architect portrayed by Adrien Brody, who starts anew in America after leaving his family behind. The film's quality is not only derived from its engaging storyline but also from its innovative use of technology. AI played a pivotal role in smoothing out the actors’ Hungarian accents, specifically through the usage of state-of-the-art software called Respeecher.

Respeecher, developed by a Ukrainian company, helps actors perfect their dialogues in languages that may not be their own. This clever solution was brought in to assist Brody and his co-star Felicity Jones, as both faced challenges with the phonetic intricacies of Hungarian, a language recognized for its unique and complex sounds.

How AI Enhances Authenticity

Dávid Jancsó, the film's editor, emphasized that while actors work diligently to portray their characters authentically, certain sounds in Hungarian posed significant hurdles. The integration of AI provided solutions that, just a few years ago, would have seemed almost magical. By creating a voice model that mimicked individual speakers, the software adeptly adjusted specific pronunciation elements, ensuring that the essence of the actors' original performances remained intact.

According to Jancsó, he even incorporated his voice into some of the adjustments made, which highlights the collaborative nature of the process. Using AI not only preserved the emotional weight of their performances but also streamlined a labor-intensive editing phase, significantly reducing the time required to finalize the project on a budget of approximately $10 million.

AI's Broader Application in the Film Industry

Respeecher is not new to the film industry, having previously worked on various projects, including restoring the iconic voice of Darth Vader in the "Obi-Wan Kenobi" series. The tool has also found applications in producing voices for historical figures, such as recreating the voice of Edith Piaf in an upcoming biopic, demonstrating its versatility. While some aspects of visual representation in "The Brutalist," such as architectural renderings for the Venice Biennale sequence, were aided by AI, Corbet clarified that these were not entirely AI-generated, but added as enhancing elements rather than replacements for creative input.

A Dialogue on AI in Creative Processes

The conversation about AI's role in the creative industries is an ongoing one. The recent strikes by the Writers Guild of America and SAG-AFTRA outlined concerns over generative AI's implications, emphasizing the need for regulations to govern its use effectively. While the filmmakers of "The Brutalist" viewed AI as a valuable asset that enhances authenticity rather than undermining creative efforts, public sentiment remains divided. The dichotomy hinges on whether AI represents a tool that elevates artistic expression or a threat to traditional craftsmanship.

Looking Ahead

As "The Brutalist" anticipates potential accolades, including an Oscar nomination, its story and the innovative filmmaking techniques employed serve not only as a tribute to the postwar Brutalist architectural movement but also as recognition of classic cinematic styles. Filmed in the rarely-utilized VistaVision format, it pays homage to mid-20th-century filmmaking while engaging modern audiences in a conversation about technology's evolving presence in cinema.

The conversations surrounding AI in films, whether for sound, visuals, or beyond, reflect an industry in transition. As filmmakers continue to explore this interplay of innovation and tradition, it will be fascinating to witness how AI reshapes narratives and storytelling conventions in the years to come.
